If you’ve wandered onto this page you’re likely looking for spiritual juju which can only be found in the energies of the animal kingdom.

You’re not alone. Spiritual seekers through all of history recorded their interactions with animal energies and medicine. They strove to build strong relationships with animal archetypes as a way of broadening the human experience with the natural world and its gifts.

Spirit, Totem and Power Animals are messengers from the world of Spirit, the collective conscious, Source, etc.

They show up in our awareness when the time is right, gifting to us a gentle reminder that we are connected us to their divine energy and can call upon it to achieve our highest and best life.

More importantly, these creatures become teachers, guides and advisors when we most need it.

Any living thing can potentially become a Spirit, Power or Totem Animal because of the inherent symbolism in that creature.

Let’s take an example. When you think of a bird you probably immediately think of flight. So from the get-go the bird spirit speaks of movement, often quick.

Take this one step further.

What about the color of the bird, the direction in which it’s flying, whether or not it tweets etc. Each of these simple things gives the bird more potential symbolic value.

As you learn about spirit animals, power animals and totems you will begin discovering many of these values and how they pertain to not just your spiritual path, but also daily living.

As you work with spirit animal guides you’re able to tap into a whole new level of awareness of the world in which we live and our own inner spiritual landscape.

This landscape is where the energy of spirit creatures manifest, bringing assistance, insights, and aptitudes that you need at that time.

Tribal animism went one step further, however, and began thinking of animals as messengers and symbols from Spirit that foretold of something or provided guidance.

That’s how Animal Totems and Spirit Guides began. If the local village Shaman saw a stag in a dream the night before a hunt, he might tell the hunters that Stag Spirit has shown him a successful expedition.

Spirit, Totem, & Power Animal Definition – and Familiars, too!

Most books and websites refer lump Spirit, Totem, and Power Animals together and refer to them simply as “Spirit Animals”.

Through my research and personal experience, I don’t find this to be an accurate description of the role these beautiful and giving creatures play in our lives here on Earth.

Certainly, the symbolism, meanings, and sacred messages that we perceive come to us from the animal world are a conglomeration of ancient myths, observation of animal behavior, stories of personal interaction, etc.

In this, any part of an animal’s “symbolism” could be applied to their definition as a Spirit Animal, Totem Animal, and Power Animal – and that of your “Familiar” as well.

It is up to us to determine what and when this symbolism and meaning makes sense in our present moments, past experiences, and future endeavors.

However, that said, the lessons from each type of animal spirit guide – how they affect us energetically – are very different. Applying those lessons and energies are, also, different processes.

And we haven’t even begun to talk about animal communication! LOL

Below are definitions for Spirit, Totem, and Power Animals – and Familiars.

Spirit Animal Definition

Perhaps a particular animal keeps appearing in a dreams, TV shows, advertisements, coming up in conversations, etc. This is your Spirit Animal.

Effectively a Spirit Animal represents characteristics or abilities you currently have, that you hope to develop, or something you should start working toward.

Returning to the example of the bird, perhaps you’re about to move, or perhaps you need to loosen up and become a little more liberated (spread your wings!).

Spirit Animals also deliver messages regarding persons, places and situations in our lives. “Do or don’t marry”, “Go for that new job”, “Slow down or speed up”, etc.

Totem Animal Definition

You know that Flamingo collection that keeps growing because you just can’t help yourself? You must buy every Flamingo anything you can lay your hands on?

Yep, that’s a totem.

It’s an animal whose energy simply “speaks to your spirit”.

Native American tradition tells us that your totem stays with you, or your family, for life. As you grow and change spiritually, the meaning of that totem likewise grows in your awareness.

Power Animal Definition

In indigenous cultures, elders teach children how to “become” a tiger when they are hunting food, “become” the otter when they need to be more playful, “become” the hawk so they can have a better overall view of a situation and see things more clearly.

This is Biomimicry, Biomimetics and what we label as “calling in your Power Animal“. Because we are all connected and because humans are, in fact, animals, each of us houses the knowledge and power of all living things in our DNA.

Hence, we can invoke or call forth the mental, emotional and physical energy of any animal and do so at will.

Animal Familiars Definition

Another animal spirit connection is the Familiar.

Unlike other types of animal guides, this is usually a living creature that bonds closely with a human counterpart and assists with metaphysical pursuits.

The cat that rolls around the floor every time you cast a circle is very likely your familiar. The bond between you and your familiar is often very deep and one built on respect.

Familiars are not simply “pets”. They are “animal soul mates”.

Animal Spirit Guides are Beautiful gifts

So, what animal spirit is calling to you? What does it mean?

Maybe you’re glimpsing a piece of your personality that’s developing or needs restraint. Or that creature can be a manifestation of emotions and situations of import.

Then too, perhaps you have meet a spirit guide or teacher that will take you on a merry chase toward enlightenment.

Look up the animals speaking to your heart here in my Spirit, Totem, and Power Animal Meanings and Symbols Guide.

In the meanwhile, release your inner Beast and use these lessons from nature to help you grow closer to nature and your very own soul!

43 years ago I went into the kitchen at night to make a cup of tea – I suddenly felt I was not alone
I looked behind me and there was this Huge Black Dog standing very still just looking at me – I called out to my husband and the dog silently turned and left! The next morning my son was born – I always remember this on his birthday and wonder if there was any meaning to this strange encounter?

    • Bernadette King says:

      Hello, Flora;

That’s certainly a Spirit Animal encounter to remember! Dogs are harbingers of unconditional love as well as protection of home and hearth. The color black symbolizes mystery – the unknown. To figure out what the Dog’s spiritual message was, maybe take some time and reflect on the subject of unconditional love. Have you received it through the last 43 years? Have you given it? To remember anything 43 years later means this Dog left a big impression. Maybe now is the right time for you to truly receive its wisdom.

      Hope that helps.

my graqnd daughter(some huron decent) is having dreams reguarding a older indian woman with walking stick and feather.she comes with a indian warrior hunter and younger girl, they want her to follow them sometimes and to dance with them what do u make of this the warrior never leaves her side

    • Bernadette King says:

      Hello, Adele;

It sounds to me like your granddaughter is meeting her ancient tribal ancestors in the aethers. In the dreamstime, we can easily travel through time and space. So, when your graddaughter is asleep she ‘journeys’ and meets her guides and/or soul family. She’s a very lucky young lady to have an Indian warrior watching over her!

      Hope that helps.

    • Bernadette King says:

      Hi, Lori;

Please accept my apology. I normally respond much faster. I was on a mini vacation and, then, Hurricane Matthew decided to visit me in Florida. 😉

Thank you for the work you do in this world. Hospice nurses are angels on earth and I honor you. Loss is so difficult, especially when it comes in multiples. I’m sending you a ginormous hug and asking all your animal spirit guides to surround you with tons of love and support.

  4. Kei Lewis says:

My mom feels/sees images of a 4 legged furry animal – maybe a dog. It laid in the bed and threw his paw across her, She is going through trying times right now. Her and my dog are besties (my mom is 72 and home with my GSD everyday). What would you say about this?

    • Bernadette King says:

      Hello, Kei;

I’m unsure what kind of insight you’re seeking. However, it sounds like your mom is truly connected with her Spirit Animal at a very deep soul level. How cool!

      Hope that helps.

  5. Danielle says:

Last night I was getting into the car and a long-haired, grey cat calmly walked over and hopped into the car. It seemed happy and well-fed, clearly not a stray, and i took a few minutes to usher the cat out. It was beautiful and I got a good feeling about it. I’ve been going through a lot lately in my relationship with my significant other, so I’m wondering what message this sweet kitty might have had for me.

Thank you and have a great weekend!

    • Bernadette King says:

      Hello, Danielle;

First, I’m sending tons of good energy to you and your significant other! I sure hope all is soon healed.

In general, Cat as a Spirit Animal is about helping us learn independence and how to set boundaries. However, Cats offer huge lessons in trust. In general, Cats aren’t really trusting animals. So, because kitty jumped in your car – that’s a big sign that you are a trustworthy and loving human! That said, Cats are very clear communicators when it comes to ‘drawing lines in the sand’ – like when one minute you’re petting them and they are purring but out of nowhere they bite you! LOL

The color grey is a middle of the road color. So, perhaps kitty came to let you know that balance is needed at this time and setting clear boundaries can help that come about.

      Hope that helps.

      Stay wild,
      Bernadette

  6. Kacie says:

    Hi Bernadette,
This is all so interesting to me. I have never spent much time seeking out or learning about the impact animal spirits bring to our lives, if we are accepting enough to allow them to guide us. So I am learning a lot from your site!
My mother passed away last year on November 3 and over the course of this past year I have grown a lot through my grieving and have found a strong desire to get closer to the spirit world around me and it continues to grow. My husband and I found out I was pregnant with what would have been our first child in Aug. Since the day I found out I have seen at least 1 butterfly almost every single day! Unfortunately, about 3 weeks ago we found out I had an early miscarriage. I still see the butterflies everyday but before (while I was still expecting) they were always yellow and now they come in different colors. I feel like they come to me as signs from my Mom just letting me know she is still here for me but now I’m wondering if maybe there is some deeper meaning I should look into.
    What do you think?

    • Bernadette King says:

      Hello, Kacie;

Please accept my condolences for your family’s losses.

Here’s what I think about your seeing so many Butterflies…

While Butterflies are one of the most archetypal symbols for transformation and transition, they have an even more amazing symbolism. See, when Butterflies migrate somehow generation after generation flies to exactly the same tree/spot as their ancestors. Even when they get blown off course, Butterlfies find their way back to nest in the same sacred home of the preceding generations. Kacie, I believe alllll these Butterfly experiences you’re having is your mom’s way of letting you know she is always with you – that she has your little one safe with her and they will both be there when you transition to the other side. I say this because those of us who are Lightworkers – who work in the Woo Woo biz – believe that heaven, the other side, beyond the veil, et al is our ‘true home’.

      Sure hope that helps.

      Stay wild,
      Bernadette

  7. Kristin says:

    Hi Bernadette
I just came across your page and was reading through everyone’s experiences with their animal guides and was interested in finding out whether its possible to have more than 1 animal spirit guide at the same time. I’ve always loved big cats, especially tigers. I was flipping through an animal spirit guide card deck once and silently asked what my spirit animal guide was and the 1st card I picked up was the tiger card. Coincidence perhaps? Also I’ve always loved and felt drawn to wolves as much as tigers and was told once by a psychic that my spirit animal was a wolf…..I’m confused as to which 1 it is now!

    • Bernadette King says:

      Hello, Kristin;

LOL That was no coincidence! That was Tiger energy pouncing on you to trust! Now, that said, we can have more than one Spirit Animal. Also, sometimes, people get mixed up between the definition of a Spirit, Totem, and Power Animal – that’s why all my artwork and articles refer to each, separately.

BTW, I’m a professional psychic medium and I can tell you that only YOU can determine what your Spirit Animal(s) is/are. So, if Wolf resonates with you – cool! If you prefer to purr rather than growl – groovy! Stay with the big Cats! 😉

      Hope that helps!

      Stay wild,
      Bernadette

  8. Julian says:

    Hi Bernadette!
First of all let me just say I was very amazed when I found your website — it’s really good! Now for the question haha. I once saw a bat outside of a classroom in our school. It was black and had reddish eyes. I didn’t notice it much at first, but some of my friends started poking it with a stick and it woke up (this was in the late morning). I suddenly felt very attached to the bat and told them to cut it out (a bit harshly, I recall?) but the bat flew away nonetheless. I was oddly a bit troubled about this. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. Any advice? Thanks!

  9. Laura says:

I commonly see crows, I used to think it was a sign of my job because i am an embalmer with an archaeology major. At the same time i often see cougars pop up (mentioned or zoo cougars pacing near me). I also believe cardinals follow me (i think it’s my grandma ) because she always used to tell me that if you see a cardinal a loved one has come to see you. Is it possible all three are totems or spirit guides?

    • spiritanimals says:

      Hello, Laura;

My humble apology for the delayed reply. I’m working hard to personally reply to all comments on both my sites – WhatIsMySpiritAnimal.com and BuildingBeautifulSouls.com. I’m finding that having two hands is not enough and I’m looking into getting surgery to become an Octopus 😉

What a sacred job you have! Those who prepare the dead for their ‘journey across the river’ are usually old souls who walk in both worlds.

That said, yes. It’s absolutely possible to have 3 or more Totems and/Spirit Guides – especially because of how many different animals are represented in different astrology systems. Take a look at How To Find Your Spirit Animal by Birthday and the Native American Zodiac. On my sister-site, BuildingBeautifulSouls.com I have a Celtic Astrology article going up tomorrow so that’s another perception of ‘Spirit, Totem, and Power Animals’. So, the point is that we are all connected (so we ‘are’ ‘all’ animals) but in each incarnation we will have animals that most speak to our spirit.

      Hope that helps.

      Stay wild,
      Bernadette

  11. Dana says:

Hello Bernadette! I honestly don’t even know how I ended up here, but I am so glad I did! I have been going through a personal HUGE life transformation. I am 49 and had a pretty horrible childhood, but very recently found it to be much worse then what I had remembered and found I had suppressed those memories. I also just recently had a relationship end that was 9 years and I loved that man more than I have ever loved another…but he was a liar and cheater. I have found that I am so good at helping others, I love and forgive others, no matter what, but I hated myself and never forgave myself and found that I hate myself for things that I haven’t even done, but others have done. So needless to say, the past few months have been the hardest of my life, but the best. I have found ME, well am still learning and finding me!! I used to be SOOOOO hard on myself and I beat myself up for even the littlest of things, but man someone can cheat on me with my friend and I can forgive him and try to work it out. So, I have learned to be more kind to myself and to lighten up. To find what “I” truly want instead of doing what I don’t want or like to do, to make everyone else happy. Or not do something I really want to because I am afraid of what others might think or say. I have lived my life in fear my whole life of making everyone else happy and never myself. I never thought I was worthy of anything, I was good enough for anything. I always thought I had to prove myself to everyone, especially men, that I am a good person. I always thought I had to earn love and acceptance instead of just knowing I am a damn good person, I am a nurse, I am the sole caretaker of my father who has dementia and my EX mother in law and was also taking care of my EX sister in law until she just passed before Christmas. I have done all I have done out of the goodness of my heart and not because I wanted anything in return and I never gave myself any credit for that at all.
I am a breast cancer survivor and have had 9 total surgeries in the past 3 years. I had to pay for all of it our of pocket and it hurt me financially and I am having to start all over. I lost my business because I literally couldnt’ work. I was supporting my ex boyfriend completely financially, supported myself and my 4 son’s and paying for cancer and then was told that I was lazy and refused to work or get a job when the money ran out. I am currently restarting my business and looking for an investor. I have lined up pretty large contracts and I will not stop until I find that one person who see’s and know’s and believes what, not only I can do, but have already done and will do even more now.
I have started meditating lately and it has been hard “shutting down” my mind, as I am always thinking about something and how to fix it all. But it has been life changing and I continue to work at and on it!! I took the animal quiz and it says that the panda is my spirit animal. That is funny, since I just saw panda’s on tv only a few days ago and I do love them every time I see them. I also have blue jays and cardinals outside my bathroom window all the time all year round and they are in my front tree all the time as well. Does that mean anything?
I will be contacting you to have a reading with you as soon as I can. I need to save up some money to be able to do that and I honestly cannot wait to have that reading and help me on this journey. I am finally living “my authentic” self, but there are days where I feel confused and overwhelmed and do not know if I am heading the right way or not. Such a huge and drastic change all at once and I think anyone would have their days of confusion…lol
I have been reading comments for hours now and it is so nice to hear that other people are here going through their own journey and you have been here for all of them!!! You seem like an amazing soul and I look forwarding to meeting you in my reading one day soon!!

Insofar two birds have fallen onto my Life path one is the common loon and lately the Great Blue Heron I find them each insirational and Deep. What are they meaning to me?

  14. Dana says:

OMG, it is the moth!! so I think anyway. I have had a moth in my room everyday, mostly at night for weeks now. I kept wondering where it was coming from, as it is winter. And yesterday I was getting ready for the day and there is was again. Just flying in circles right in front of me. I didn’t think anything of it, since I haven’t seen the moth as a spirit animal, but it is daily for about 2 weeks now and I am thinking it must mean something. Can the moth be a spirit animal? If so, what does it mean?

  15. Beverly Overstreet says:

I had a wonderful blessing yesterday. I was working on a movie set on location. In the park a stone’s throw away I was observing a beautiful brightly colored Orange hummingbird flying and Diving in a j shape flight pattern feeding on flying insects. There was a gentleman sitting right next to me I was working with but was not acquainted and we were commenting on how beautiful the color was and how unusual the flight pattern was and as we were talking it , it completely vanished into literally thin air. He looked at me and I looked at him and said what happened it disappear he said I’m not a religious person but? I being a very spiritual person and partially Native American knew it was something Supernatural and I had a peace and joy immediately like I had received a gift. Let me preface this by saying I have never done drugs or even smoke pot or ever seen a hallucination. This was real. It was broad daylight. I am a Christian and do believe in the Supernatural but this has never happened before. I have recently been praying for a sign that I am doing the right thing by wanting to relocate to Hawaii from Southern California and with that prayer specifically asked God to slap me upside of the face with a sign. I have never read anything about spiritual animals but I would like to know more. Thank you for listening!

Hey Bernadette! I’ve been curious about finding my own spirit animal but I guess I couldn’t find it. There’s a cat here, living in the street, and my friend loves her. We feed her, but I am afraid of her. It keeps appearing on my sight. Even in movies that I watch, and hearing some other cats crying in the middle of the night. Is this could be a sign? Do I have to know more about this because I have done a meditation but I can’t really find it. There’s no effect on me. Hope you read this, thank you!

  20. Erica says:

My familiar found me when I was 14 years old by way of my brother. My mom and I came home late from working at my mom’s job, and when we opened the door it was pitch black. I was working to help pay to get the lights turned back on. As I dug in my bag for my flashlight I heard this low growl. I clicked it on to find this beautiful Doberman growling up at my mother. My mom was frozen in place shaking like a leaf. By some strange urge I walked up to the dog and said calm Shakti. She immediately sat down and looked up at me. I knew she was there for me. To protect me. That night forward she slept on the outside edge of my side of the bed I shared with my sister. The morning after we found her inside the living room we we’re told how she followed by brother home and howled until he let her in. He said she sat at the door and just waited and wouldn’t budge. That was until I came home.
I had never heard the name, but knew her name was Shakti. She stayed by my side everywhere I went and protected me from my mom and her boyfriend’s for about a year. Then one day when I was getting off the school bus I see this man trying to hurry and get her in the car. Shakti was not moving, but he kept trying. I was made to do the hardest thing I have ever done that day. I had to say good by to her. My mother sold Shakti to her boss who bread Dobermans. They made me get her in the back of is big Cadillac all the while crying to the point I couldn’t see. I said goodbye to my best friend and protector. I found out later that she vomited the whole way to his home, and when she was taken out of the car she took off running never to be seen again. I still think of Shakti many nights wishing she was asleep next to me and whichever child has made it to my very large bed that night. I have forgiven my mother, but still have not forgotten the heartbreak. Wherever you are Shakti I hope you are loved and protecting another child in need of your protection, strength, love and comfort.

  22. Carli says:

    Hi there!

I saw Anubis a few weeks ago dressed as Maria. I looked away and back. He was still standing there. So I took my fiance by hand and walked away. I am getting very confuced as I was trying to sleep last Friday but kept crying for no aparent reason. I just had a very dalk feeling. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw “visions” as I cant really call them dreams because I was not sleeping. The first dream was about a man dying in the desert. But as each gush of sandy wind blew, blocking my view, he moved closer to me. The second one was about black crystals growing taking over all the space that was left. The third one about a black stream in the desert. I’ve seen things since the age of 3. Please help?

i keep seeing ravens, a lot lately , could this be my spirit animal? one flew on my backyard while i had the back door open and i was sitting on the couch right by it. my dog started barking so it scared it away.
2 birds flew right to my car while i was driving, one got trapped in the front side of my car and i didn’t notice till hours later, and the other one i saw it and heard it so i stopped my car right after it happened , got down and saw the dead bird landed on the side of the road..
also while sitting at a bay shore, smoking , i saw a little dark bird flying back and forth like trying to get my attention, it flew by the water almost touching it and then it would hide and come back out and repeat… i thought it was really cute.
and today , a white bird flew right by my window while i was laying in my car. it stayed at a steady for a few seconds and then flew up and then away.

can you explain what all this could mean ???

    thank you so much …

This early morning I was doing my Taiji Chuan forms , at the deepest level, & and brown grayish panther , leaped across a bike path , into the woods, within 20 feet of me.

I didn’t feel fear but awe and like I was honored to see one so close. I just continued my workout but as I made my way from the clearing, where I workout, I experienced some uneasiness as I walked to the gate—it was the longest 30 feet that I ever walked—so I just concentrated on my breathing.
Again, I felt so blessed and honored by this event that it couldn’t be a coincidence, could it?
Also, I am living with my grieving mother since my father died recently. Furthermore, I am very excited to be leaving this lonely place in Florida where I have no friends.
    thanks for reading

I once had a dream that a giant yellow sloth and I were swimming in a glacial lake… he spoke to me and handed me a dark blue tie… I got out of the lake and a black limo was waiting for me… I opened the door, and a fresh black suit and starched white shirt were hanging for me inside

A few years ago, while a passenger in a car, I saw a white dog in the middle of the highway. I did a double take and of course the dog was not actually there. The image haunted me at first. It has stayed with me.

I went to a Croc park a few days ago and one caged crocodile followed me each time I walked past it’s cage. Is this a potential spirit animal or did I look like lunch.

My mom has a glioblastoma. She had surgery that went well and her first round of chemo (that also went well). After that though her platelet levels remain too low to have her second and more crucial round of chemo. I’ve been having recurring dreams that feature crocuses, light snow, and one of each of the following, raven, wolf, panther, falcon and butterfly. The wolf has been ever present in my dreams since a young child and the panther, falcon and butterfly have been coming for the past few years after a very difficult time. The raven is new. What disturbs me is that I am next to my mother’s grave but it isn’t in a cemetary. It’s the top of a hill overlooking a valley. Can you help me sort the meaning?

Are we connected to any one particular any animal from birth. Or out of biomimicry can we absorb the energy of anyone animal and resemble them. Is there any universal connection or gift that we are born with that is derived from the animal kingdom. Imbibed in our spirit and physical reality that we see not aWare of. And can we fund out

hello. i was interested on finding my spirit animal or guide, and decided to meditate for a while to try to find it. While it felt like only several minutes, it was at least a 2 hour experience. I found myself in a grassy field, and i looked around until i found a fox eating the grass. i asked it if it was my spirit animal, and it simply looked up and turned its head, and it was looking at a dragon flying towards us from the horizon. the dragon soon landed, and the fox went back to eating. i asked the dragon if he was my spirit animal, and he told me that he was. He gave me a very interesting message, saying that i need to be more assertive and do things for the sake of me if i want to find success with what i love. im still in shock and amazement that i saw such a majestic beast, right in front of me. i can hardly believe it.

I’m gaining more insight of life and it feels over whelming but i know I’m stronger then what i think sometimes i just focus on the truth of the matter and I receive a better outlook on things.

    Hi there, love the article.

I was wondering if you can help shed some light on something.
I have a strong bond with a monkey spirit and a lion spirit since I was young. As I’ve started doing more spiritual work I feel there presence more frequently. I feel there energy flow through me.

The other night I felt and saw my Dad also has some sort of Lion spirit although it feels a little different to the Lion spirit within me. Are there as spirit animal families that perhaps bond to families. Or perhaps one’s that work with/protect a lineage? Or an animal which is passed on genetically?

    Interested to hear your opinion.

    Thank you.

My Son Ken has always told us his spirit animal is the Polar bear. His birthday is Dec 9th, 1952 and I would like to know what animal you might have as his Animal? I would like too put together a little booklet for him about his predicted animal spirit, and all about the Polar Bear as he has quite a collection
    of Polar Bear Statuary.

My very best childhood friend and I have recently been reacquainted and catching up on lost time. We picked right up where we left off. That being said, I’m currently visiting her for thanksgiving. As we were driving home together, we both were stopped by TWO red tailed hawks TOGETHER. I’ve NEVER experienced anything like this. I was just wondering what it means or represents.
