Insect Symbolism & Meanings

What’s bugging you? 😉

Perhaps it is a Spirit Insect striving to get your attention, bearing a message or a lesson. There is literally no habitat in which insects do not live, and they are very diversified creatures. And while many people think of insects as annoyances they are incredibly necessary for pollinating everything from fruits and vegetables to flowers.

Some of the global symbolism for the Insect Class include:

  • Variety
  • Nurturing
  • Fertility
  • Sustenance
  • Productivity
  • Natural order
  • Tidiness
  • Food Chain
  • Triune Divine
  • Tenacity
  • Persistence
  • Privacy
  • Community

Helpful insects moderate other insects that otherwise destroy crops. Some are the proverbial weed whackers of nature, some act as a food source for animals and even humans, and others still help decompose natural waste that would otherwise accrue uncontrolled.

Even if you’re not planning to head out to the store for fresh grubs, there is a lot that Insect Spirit can teach us.

Insects have certain characteristics in common. As adults, Insects have bodies with three segments and three legs. This natural feature gives Insect connections with the three-fold Divine.

Some of the most commonly talked about Insects in the world of Animal Symbolism and Animal Spirit Guides include Bees, Butterflies, Crickets, & Spiders.

Insects are communal creatures. Nonetheless, they seem to go about their business with little attention to what others are doing. Rather they just keep going forward, adapting with relative ease as the environment changes.

Insect Spirit Animal

As with other Animal Spirits, the exact meaning of an Insect depends heavily on the exact type of creature it is, and also how this symbol appears in your life.

For example if a specific is constantly buzzing in your ear, particularly a bee, it’s bringing you a message from the Ancestors or the Divine.

Butterfly appearing in your life represents a transformation on the horizon often of a personal nature, dragonfly heralds luck and sweet fire fly lights up the darkness of our life.

The best way to discover for certain what your Spirit Animal is trying to say is by meditating on that image and writing down anything that comes to mind.

Insect Totems

If you were born with an Insect as your Totem Animal, you are probably on the move a lot. Sitting still is not your “thing”. You want to fly off and enjoy life’s nectar, enriching people along the way.

Insect Totems like being in Nature often, and may even seek out careers like landscaping or botany to invest that passion accordingly.

Insect Power Animals

There are tens of thousands of species of Insects and, each, important to the bio-diversity on Earth. If your calling in life is to help Mother Gaia, call on the energy of the Insect world when you want spiritual guidance from the animal kingdom.

The majority of the world’s insect population is physically, very tiny. Yet, they all serve such large functions in our eco-system. When you want to do big things but are feeling too small to make a difference, invoke Insect as your Power Animal. They all can help you see that little things come in big packages!

Insects in Celtic Symbolism

Because the Celts so revered the animal kingdom, Insect Symbolism and Meaning plays heavily in their myths and cultural beliefs. It’s important to remember that the Celtic people, just as the Native Americans, studied all animals, insects, reptiles, etc. to learn about survival as well as to glean spiritual connection and understanding.

As in most cultures, Bees, Butterflies, & Spiders are among the most meaningful Insects to the Celts. In especially, Bees were thought to bring good luck and Butterflies the embodiment of loved ones who had crossed to the other side.

Native American Symbols: Insects

Insects play a wide variety of different roles in the mythology of Native American tribes.

Generally speaking, Native American traditions tend to have very negative perceptions of swarming insects, biting insects, and (in agricultural societies) crop-destroying insects, associating them with disease, evil witchcraft, and bad luck.

On the other hand, like other small animals, insects often appear in legends to symbolize meekness and humility, two positive traits valued by most Native American cultures.

Hello! I am also getting some strong messages from roaches, and insects. One night my got spiritually stung by something, it was painful. That day i had sprayed some repellant around my apartment and they were very angry about it, especially the roaches. I always been very compassionate about them, but it started to get out of control so we took those measures. But i have been very intrigued about those messages i keep getting from them. What would it mean? I know they are angry, but there’s this darkness about them, and sometimes i get this very scary thoughts in my head, i am not used to think about it. I have even decided to move from this place because of this, i feel there’s a strong swarm and presence from the insects spirits in this area. I am trying to think beyond duality and not think of it as a bad thing, but there’s always a negative pattern that follows this presence that is not very welcoming. If there’s any help, please let me know.

Apology for delayed reply. I’m finding that having two hands is not enough and I’m looking into getting surgery to become an Octopus. 😉

I LOVE that Roaches are your Spirit Animal! Like Buzzards, Cockroaches are misunderstood and maligned. This is a terrible thing because the world desperately needs both these beautiful souls! Cockroaches and Buzzards are the janitors of our world. They clean up decay. Who among us wants that job yet they choose to serve humanity in this fashion.

Roaches are the ultimate survivors! They’ve been around since the Dinosaur age. We can learn a great deal from Cockroaches. Check out this article and learn about how amazing Roaches are.

So, absolutely! Roaches and Insects can be your Spirit, Totem, and Power Animal. Fighting our deepest fears is very much like battling for survival because our fears can kill off our hopes, dreams, confidence, and more. Once we conquer our fears, we can not only survive – but thrive!

      Hope that helps.

      Stay wild,

Hello i came home one afternoon in a frustrated mood and went to lay down on my bed. I felt something crawling on me so i smacked it, then again i felt something crawling on me so i got up to turn on my light and there were a swarm of termites on my pillows, not my whole bed just my pillows. I’m wondering why none were flying (since they had wings) especially when i laid down none flew away and there were none flying in my room just on muy pillows. This is a new house we have been in it for almost a month. I got up and freaked out and started smashing them then i got my phone out and took video and a pic of them so i know it wasn’t an illusion. I then got my pillows and shook them off outside i them preceded to do the same with the rest of my bedding. There were a few here and there on the walls. I moved my bed to see where they were coming from but there was no sign of an entrance for them. We had never had any issues with termites before. I picked up my mattress to see if there was anything between but there was not. After i cleared them and checked everywhere for where they might have came from i ended up empty handed. As i was folding the throw blankets i shook them off and i didn’t see one single termite again. They had disappeared as quickly as they had appeared. I’d love to know what this is a sign of. It has me vey shaken up and i haven’t returned home since. I’m going to buy a new mattress and bedding and sage myself and room when i return home but I’m so courteous as to what this means. Can you offer me any guidance? It would be most appreciated.

I see symbolism in pretty much everything… most of it I can find on the internet, but this time I can’t. I know someone who was bit by a Jerusalem crocket that had climbed up in her VERY HIGH bed and bit her ear while she was sleeping. Seems that that should ha e some symbolic meaning to me. Can you help?
