Seahorse Symbolism & Meaning

Many ancient cultures connected the Seahorse with various Divine beings.

In Rome and Greece, for example, the Seahorse was sacred to Poseidon and Neptune, potent sea gods. As a result, one of the keynote meanings for Seahorse is one of power and authority, particularly in matters of emotion and intuition because of the Water Element involved.

A rather lovely story from Greco-Roman times indicates that the Seahorse is a guide to drown sailors.

This creature safely guides them through the spiritual vortex until they reach their ordained fate in the afterlife (is it any wonder that sailors used seahorse images as luck charms?).

Spiritual seekers could interpret this afterlife as something more metaphorical – namely the Seahorse monitoring dramatic change so we can navigate those tumultuous waters safely.

There is something about Seahorse Spirit that fires human imagination.

An interesting fact is that the Greeks called Seahorses by the name Hippocampus (horse sea monster).

One cannot help but wonder about the connection between this name and the part of our brains that controls memory (Hippocampus).

Lightworkers have sometimes theorized that a Seahorse Spirit Animal is a keeper of history, including our past lives. Seahorse is also a creature of whimsy and inventiveness.

One of the most potent and unusual Seahorse meanings and symbols is that of the Male aspect, particularly the role of the Father.

In nature, male Seahorses are those who carry the female’s eggs for about one and a half months in a tail pouch until they are born. This speaks of an amazing partnership between the males and females of the species, which are said to mate for life.

Other symbolic values for Seahorse come from its physical nature.

These tiny sea creatures has eyes that can look in opposite directions at the same time, giving them the meaning of observation and awareness.

The boney nature of Seahorse is a safeguard and represents protection. Not being the best of swimmers, Seahorse moves slowly from spot to spot, only using its tail as an anchor in stormy seas. This symbolizes patience, serenity and persistence.

Seahorse Spirit Animal

When Seahorse swims in as your animal spirit guide he is often telling you that you have become obstinate and unyielding to your own detriment.

Pause for a moment and get some perspective. With Seahorse energy to support you, this will be easier than usual given that Seahorse’s eyes can see simultaneously in opposite directions.

Sometimes when you hit a wall all it takes is backing up and looking for alternative ways to overcome it.

Another message from Seahorse spirit is that while you may be driven to help others, there are times when you cannot be selfless.

Seahorse reminds us that we must fill our inner well if we are to truly help others (and ourselves) drop anchor and stay steady when the waves begin to crash down upon us.

Seahorse Totem Animal

Those born with a Seahorse totem are stalwart do-gooders. You have a natural desire to help people, particularly those who cannot truly help themselves.

Others find you very thoughtful and well-mannered. You make an excellent parent and partner thanks to your highly intuitive nature.

Note, however, that some will find your precognition and accurate perceptions a little disconcerting – you can see right through barriers that people hide behind.

While Seahorse people work frequently with Water energy, you also need some type of balance.

One lesson from your totem is grounding and centering. Use that strong tail to secure yourself when life seems stormy.

Hold sure until you know the clouds have passed and you can continue on your journey safely.

In relationships those with the Seahorse totem are simple and straightforward.

You probably prefer an evening at home with candles over a fancy restaurant. The smallest of romantic gestures is never lost on you – in fact you love them and reciprocate accordingly.

Seahorse Power Animal

Seek out the Seahorse as a Power Animal when you need greater patience or a renewed sense of inner peace.

Another excellent time to ask Seahorse’s aid is when you are about to become a father. You couldn’t ask for a more trustworthy guide to this exciting new stage in your life.

Beyond this, Seahorse becomes a great energetic partner when you need protection, want to express your personal power, hope to improve awareness or when there are old feelings that should be released so you can move forward.

Seahorse as a Celtic Animal Symbol

Celtic iconography shows Seahorse as a brave and patient navigator of the sea. This creature also symbolizes our emotions and creativity. In some Celtic regions the Seahorse figured into Divine mythology and meanings.

Seahorse Dreams

When Seahorse comes swimming into your dreamscape be prepared to unlock matters that have been buried in your subconscious.

Dreaming about Seahorses let’s you know that it’s time for waking up and stretching your perspectives, particularly spiritually and emotionally. Other interpretations of Seahorse depend on what it’s doing in the dream.

This was intriguing to read and made a lot of sense. I dreamt last night of myself but was thinking of one seahorse but then was told to have five not sure why five but feel it’s step forward in my understanding of things at present.

    • Bernadette King says:

      Hi, Sandra;

5 is a very sacred number because it symbolizes the elements – earth, air, water, fire, spirit (aether). On my sister-site, BuildingBeautifulSouls.com you can read all about the 5 Elements Symbolism and Meanings.

      Sure hope that helps.

This was insightful. In the dream I seen many sea creature but always in pairs. I had to learn and pick one to become one. Seahorses caught my attention and learned about the male that are the one who carries the babies; as soon that I learn the facts my transformation began. This vivid dream was bugging me until I came here and finally understood what it was trying to tell me and how accurate it is. Thanks

      Hello, ;

My humble apology for the delayed reply. I’m working hard to personally reply to all comments on both my sites – WhatIsMySpiritAnimal.com and BuildingBeautifulSouls.com. Right now I only have 2 hands but I am working on getting surgery to become an Octopus – then I’ll have eight! 😉

In your dream, since you always see the animals in pairs I wonder if you are trying to work out some relationship ‘stuff’? See, the element of water is all about our deepest emotions and soul’s desires, fears, etc. Just a thought…

      Hope that helps.

    Hello,

I have had funny experiences with seahorse as a spirit animal. I first found out about it woth my ex boyfriend. It went to his spirit animal and then contacred him himself for him to tell me about it and that i needed to figure out why it was making itself known in such a way. That was a couple years ago now.
Id always feel him/ see him popping by the odd time when other animals were stepping in. But I think it was last fall when I had a really weird dream. I was out by a shore of a really nice salt water pond that was just off of the ocean and there were these sea horses. There were a few others around but there were 2 that specifically stuck around. Theyd cling onto me and they became something i had come to love in the dream and take care of everyday until one day everything went dark. Pollutions killed everything in that was in the pond. I tried to save them… But the one died and then the other went was trying to hang on but then ended up slipping off of my fingers and also died. It was really terrible.
And now today… I was having terrible anxiety and for the first time in a while… It was trying to push its presence into my thoughts. It was clearly here. I hadn’t read up on the totem in a while and decided to do so again to find that the totems were updates as last time i checked, they were relatively new to the spirit animal world. What I read was point on. It was shocking. Precisely point on. That sea horse was the only thing that was able to calm me down and the insight was amazing. But that dream still bugs me a lot. I have had others similar to it about fish even… But nothing with the connection that was held between those 2 seahorses and myself.

I am sorry… I just got a new phone and I have not figured out yet how to fix these terrible typing settings…

i was looking for some information on symbolism of seahorse and came across with this site. two weeks ago, i accidentally poured hot deep fry oil on myself. and surprisingly i didnt burn myself at all. but the next day, i had a minor burn mark on my belly shaped as a seahorse. yesterday, i was bleeding due to my menstruation and when i was at the toilet, the blood dripping from me into the water created another seahorse shape. i somehow felt like I have been protected. not sure if i should try to find a meaning from all of these.

Hi, I was out for dinner on Sunday 4th of June with my partner. We decided to go for a drink to one of my favourite bars. We got stuck in a shower on the way down the street and we passed many bars that my partner said to go into, I wanted to keep going although we were getting soaked to our skin. We reached the bar and i went to dry off while my patrner got us two beers. I sat down took one sip out of my beer and then BANG a ceramic seahorse fell from the top of the wall behind me and crashed onto my head, the piece which was very heavy landed with such force it cracked into pieces. I got such a fright qnd had no idea what had happened me, i went to the cdoctor but luckily i seemed fine, as an onsetr i got post concussion and post trauma. I am a very spiritual person and I work and live in a Buddhist centre so I see this as a wake up call on my spiritual path, it seems like it is a positive yet traumatic thing to happen me. I have some shamanic courses and am very into the land, sea (which i live beside) and animal spirits. I really enjoyed reaDING YOUR EXPLANATIONS ABOUT THE SEAHORSE. i WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR VIEW ON MY EXPERIENCE PLEASE.

I am currently reading Tara Mohr’s Playing Big where she asks the readers to do a visualization exercise in order to find our inner mentor. When I was going through the visualization, my future self gave me a parting gift which was a little seahorse figurine. And that brought me here. A lot of what I’ve read actually starts to make sense now. Thank you for such a beautiful and poignant page.

  9. Kori says:

I love seahorses and began being really drawn to them when I was pregnant with my first child. I sketched a picture of a pregnant one for my partner. Makes sense now.

Hi this kinda helped me I just had a strang dream were me and my friends were on a lake playing night hockey and one of them caught fire out of nowhere and I helped put it out but then another girl fell through the ice and I ran to as fast as I could till I was ahead of where she was going then I broke the ice and pulled her out but then from the deep dark water came this giant glowing seahorse, dragon looking hybrid thing and its eyes (I can still see those eyes in my head they kinda look like a sea of stars) looked into my eyes like it wanted me to follow and I almost went in but then someone pulled me away and asked what I was looking at then I woke up but the weirdest part about the dream was not the beautiful creature or my friends in danger but the fact that I woke up and I still had a sense of wanting to go into the water and follow this creature because it seemed like it had something really important to show me or wanted to let me know. If you know anything else on this let me that would be great otherwise the information that you have already provided was pretty helpful. :]
