I grew up in poverty. Not the “Waugh! I don’t have the newest iPhone” poverty mentality but real poverty. It was the garden variety ‘dad left and mom worked three jobs’ scenario.

Oh, how I detested being poor. How I hated living in a run down trailer in the middle of the woods. How my chest still seizes up when I remember mom’s steel will. Her Mars (Scorpio) energy was stronger than most. The warrior in her saved us again and again. My hero outwitted homelessness and saved us from predators – of all kinds.

Mom’s mantra, “Somebody out there has it worse than we do. So, jerk yourself up by your bootstraps and let’s get with it.”, became my mantra.

From poverty (and with no college education) I’ve done very well for myself. Entrepreneurship is, has been, and always will be my path. Though many angels have given aid, as a business owner, all bucks stop with me. At the root of every success and failure is my smiling (or sobbing) mug.

Like mom, I’m also a Scorpio. A Scorpion’s sacred contracts always include a wonderful array of death and re-birth opportunities (she says sarcastically). Our highs fly to the heavens on the back of Pegasus, our lows hover somewhere between Dante’s sixth and ninth levels of hell. So when I tell you I’ve done the ultimate face-off with money, I mean it.

Oh, yes. I’ve warred with wealth on a number of occasions. Sometimes money narrowly escaped my clutches. Other times I killed it with my bare hands stupidity. And, still other times it wove itself into a warm comfy blankie and cocooned me.

The decision to reach for wealth is not an easy one. Consciously committing to reaching for the brass ring takes a special kind of spirit – an Animal Spirit.

How Animal Spirits Help You Make Money

In the world of investing, Animal Spirits is a term used by John Maynard Keynes to explain why decisions are made even in times of uncertainty – during times when the market is volatile.

The book Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism – George A. Akerlof & Robert J. Shiller discusses behavioral economics. This type of economics studies psychology as it relates to the financial decision-making processes of individuals and institutions.

Basically, the talking heads work to explain how and why money matters and business decisions aren’t always made through ‘rational, mathematical means’ but via our ‘animal spirits’ (gut or animal instinct) and, often times, with successful results. Animal Spirits also describes the misconceptions people have about money and how these falsehoods can be their economic demise.

Here’s how this is relevant to you and your bank account…

Now, we’ve all heard the taglines a zillion times;

• Follow your bliss.
• Turn your passion into profit.
• Trust your gut.
• Work hard and you’ll be rewarded.
• Your first instinct is always right.
• The most important investment you’ll ever make is in yourself.

If these sayings are true why, then, is the climb out of poverty so treacherous? Why is it so hard for folks to make money doing what they love – to heed the calling of their spirit? Why do we mistakenly believe that only the chosen few can accumulate true wealth?

Because many of us are disconnected from and uncomfortable with our own Animal Spirit.

At the core of every animal resides the survival instinct. Silence that instinct and you’re in big trouble.

This method is for those who aren’t yet conscious of what their blocks are to abundance and wealth.

Before going into this mediation, set your intention. Ask the animal spirit guides to step forward and show you gently show you any fears, harsh judgement or belief paradigms you may have regarding money and wealth.

• Feeling guilty or greedy because you desire wealth.

As you work with your Animal Spirit (meeting it through meditation, observing which Totem Animals have been popping up in your awareness, etc.) pay close attention to the male/female, soft/hard, and light/dark energies.

Yin is the dark part of the symbol, the feminine. It is said the symbol works like sunlight passing over a mountain and valley. The Yang’s light will pass over the mountain and valley making what was obscure revealed and what had been revealed, obscure.
